The Siege of Nicaea, from May to June 1097, marked the first major victory of the First Crusade. Â The Crusaders, a diverse army of European knights, besieged the Seljuk Turkish stronghold of Nicaea. Facing a determined defense, the Crusaders employed siege engines and utilized the Byzantine Emperor Alexius I Comnenus’s naval blockade to weaken and the city, which surrendered to the Byzantines.
